Dear Claire,
The mom should NOT allow the baby to hurt her, ever. At a year, a baby can
learn not to bite the ...... that feeds her. All my kids tried this - once.
Get in touch with your local LLL group leaders FAST - they handle this
question every day, and LLL has some good printed material on the topic.
Breastfeeding must be pleasant for both, or mom can fall into codependency
real fast. Limit-setting is a part of good parenting, and this is a good
place to start. Help the mom to understand that her continuing to allow her
baby to abuse her is setting up a potentially harmful relationship. Babies
don't permanently wean just because mom won't let them bite.
