Penny,
The roles of a LLLL and LC are overlapping but not identical. Most IBCLC's
who started out in LLL did much more hands-on care as Leaders while studying
for the exam than Leaders who did not intend to become IBCLC's. It is against
LLLI policy to refer to oneself, therefore a Leader is not supposed to tell a
mom that she is also available for consults. Some Leaders who are IBLCE's
refer to another LC, some keep 2 phone lines, one for League calls and one for
LC calls, some retire from Leadership or stop taking phone calls at all.
Depends on how many other LC's are available in your area. I had a really
hard time integrating this all, tried all the above approaches, and finally
decided to be a resource for other Leaders, and let that be my contribution to
LLL. I still do not charge for telephone conversations, though I do limit
them in time. And I encourage my clients to go to meetings for the support
and information.
