In reply to Judy Dunlap's question about the policy of magazines to charge
for reprinting copies. The answer is YES--this is standard policy. And
whether for a for-profit or not-for-profit group makes no difference. Keep
in mind that making such copies is not cheap and virtually all publishing
houses have to at least recoup their costs. Even if they do not do the
copying, they will charge. There are several reasons for same, but the
bottom line is staying in business. The cost that Scientific American
charged was actually not all that high, insofar as the artilce in question
was longer than 3 pages and they were going to charge on $3/copy, less than
$1/page.
