Regarding the question of maternal iron status and iron in human milk. -----Iron concentration
in milk is not influenced by maternal iron status (Dallman 1986Acta Pediatr Scand Supple
323:59-67.; Siimes MA, et al. J Pediatr 1984;104:196-199).
With regards to infants exclusively breastfed for longer than 4-6 months:
The committee recommends that all breastfed infants receive supplemental source
of iron after 4 months (for prevention of anemia) either in the form of fortified
cereal, meat or iron supplements (1 mg/kg/d). Screening for anemia is recommended at 9
months of age for breastfed infants (Institute of Medicine, Committee on the Prevention,
detectionand management of iron deficiency anemia among US childrena nd Women of
Childbearing age).
Hope this is helpful.
