Dear Lacnetters,
This is in response to Alicia Dermer's request for more information
regarding the difference between the Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative
(BFHI) vs. the Breastfeeding Health Initiative (BfHI). The journal "Birth",
Volume 22, Number 2 has an excellent editorial regarding the vast
differences between the two. As a matter of fact, anyone who takes the time
to read this will probably be pretty irrate. The BfHI appears to be an
extremely watered down, poor replacement for the BFHI. As a matter of fact,
seven major organizations (AAP, ACNM, ACOG, ILCA, LLL, APIAHF, & AOHA)
refused to endorse the final recommendations of BfHI. It is interesting to
note that all the organizations except ACOG refused to endorse it because it
was too weak and an "unacceptable substitute for the global initiative".
ACOG, however, refused to endorse it because it was TOO RESTRICTIVE. Anyone
interested in the BFHI/BfHi controversy, should read this article.
