Dear Diane Karnbach,
The positioning might be okay, but the attachment definitely isn't since she
has cracked nipples to show for it. The damage to the nipples will give you
the clues to what is going wrong. If the cracks are on the top (face) of the
nipple, the baby is not taking enough breast into its mouth, and does not
have the nipple back where the hard palate joins the soft palate.

Our feeling is that if the attachment is fixed, the painful letdown will
probably be a more normal sensation.
