Thanks, Maryelle, for the advice to querry this mom about recent use of
antibiotics. I phoned mom and she reported about 5 weeks of antibiotic
therapy pp. Blood flecks in baby's stool showed up shortly after. Pedi never
cultured stool beyond one brief in-office smear. It was negative for
bacteria, accord. to mom. Mom reports that since switching to one-breast-per
feed regimen the colic has completely cleared. Stools are paste-like and
mustard colored. She has been on peanut and dairy elimination diet and all
blood flecks have stopped except for one incident in past 5 days where she
ate an eggo waffle. This is the 2nd incident where a 'hidden' dairy
ingredient in a convenience food triggered an apparant reaction in baby.
Everything is going so much better that there is no longer any pressure to
wean to nutramagen etc. I have had some brief conversation with the mother
to be very careful and go slowly with introduction of solids.
