Diana,
The reason for soy in the abm "gifts" for bf mothers is that some bf moms
prefer to use soy as it tastes worse than cow's milk based formulas (if such a
thing is possible!), ostensibly decreasing the risk that baby will "prefer"
the artificial milk. Since babies will suck on bottles of bitter substances,
and the method of delivery (bottle) is harmful to the breastfeeding
relationship as well, I would consider this rational(sp?) faulty at best.
Secondly, most soy abm's do not contain lactose, but use sucrose or
glucose as their carbohydrate source. Lactose is the preferred food for the
growing brain, metabolizing at the exact rate that the brain needs energy.
The abm manufacturers try to turn this serious detriment into a plus by
touting their products for diarrhea (which can cause a very transient lactose
intolerance). Now, what is the leading cause of infant and toddler diarrhea
in the universe, class? (Just like providing antibiotics for otitis media,
and oral rehydration solutions, they are covering all the bases.) Create a
need and fill it, right, class?
Aaargh once again.
