Hi, Pearl Shifer, IBCLC, LLL here- I forgot to give my "real" name at my last
posting, my AOL "handle" is "Phonatic" so forgive me if I went incognito
earlier...
One of the WIC moms who has breastfed in the past and was looking forward to
breastfeeding this time has found out that her PPD was positive. She hasn't
had a chest X ray (can a mom be X-rayed in the third trimester to rule out
active TB?) but has a cousin who has active TB and feels this may be the
source of her problem. She's from Nicaraugua - is it possible that she
received vaccine there as a child and could that be the source of her
positive PPD? She is asymptomatic. Her midwife has told her that she won't
be able to breastfeed. Could she pump and dump (once the baby is born) until
she is checked for active disease? Also, how does a mom dispose of milk that
is being pumped and dumped? (ditto moms with other reasons for doing
this-e.g., the mom who had "radioactive" milk after treatment for thyroid
cancer...what is a safe way for disposing of "tainted" milk?)
Thanks for any input.
Pearl Shifer
