Sarah Friend Barnett asked about when Reglan would be used.
I only know about domperidone, but if both are used to increase milk
supply, then here are the situations where I have recommended mothers to go
and ask for a prescription. One involved a two month old baby who was
unconscious in the hospital and on a constant 24 hour feed as a result of
botulism. The mother was frantically pumping, but her supply was dwindling
and she didn't want her baby to receive formula. Another case involved
someone whose milk supply wouldn't increase no matter what she did (nursing
constantly and pumping...) On this drug she produced enough milk for her
baby. I don't usually tell mothers about it, because usually they don't
really have a low milk supply (thriving baby who nurses a lot or doesn't
sleep and mom blames supply), or it's just a latch or position that needs
to be fixed. However, sometimes it's useful.
Breat wishes,
Nancy Phillips, LLLL in Toronto, where we are lucky to have Dr. Newman who
will prescribe domperidone.
