Diane Karnbach,
Mom is pumping before latch on to the first letdown due to the continued
engorgement. I am also having her pump after feeding to get EMM for
supplementation and keep her supply up.
We initially started with a q 2 hr schedule but baby seems to nurse better if
she's on a q 3 hr (I found this is true of other premies).
As far as the usual stay awake techniques-- they work initially but if she
has fallen asleep at the breast and we try- kid freaks and won't latch on.
The excessive molding of the head at 10 days of age bothers me.
The only thing I can think of is the baby is calorically deprived which is
why she falls asleep so easily. I am hoping that by flooding her with
calories she will improve on her own.
Any other comments-- I'll be seeing her again tomorrow
TIA
Marie Davis
