Hi, all you wise 'netters: I have a new situation with a mother about
whom I had previously posted and gotten some helpful ideas. This mother
had been ready to wean at 2 weeks because her baby kept putting up a
major struggle for at least 5 to 10 minutes before finally latching on
and nursing very nicely, thank you. That problem resolved eventually,
probably was due to a stiff neck from traumatic birth. Mother amazingly
hung in there and is happier but now at 5 weeks of age, the baby has
started a new trick: he nurses beautifully for about 10-15 minutes, then
suddenly pulls off the breast (nipple still in his mouth at times!),
screams, roots around, eventually gets coaxed back to the breast but
keeps repeating this behavior every couple of minutes for the rest of the
feeding. Mom has a lot of milk, she can see it spraying into baby's
mouth, but he doesn't have the problem during her initial let-down, only
after 10-15 minutes. Baby has been very "gassy" and behaves "colicky" on
evenings, regurgitates after most feedings and occasionally projectile
vomits (ultrasound showed no pyloric stenosis). Baby is thriving and his
exam appears normal. Mother is not complaining of sore nipples (yet!).
Due to the colicky behavior mother has been restricting all milk products
(including reading labels for casein and whey) for the past week. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Alicia. [log in to unmask]
