To: Anne Montgomery--No argument here re: BF is a women's issue. We were
having a problem w/ perceived racial difficulties re: counseling coming from
our 1st group of peer counselors. We actually were foolish enough for a
short while to try and pair W/W, B/B, etc. until we realized we were
perpetuating stereotypes and fear. Anyway, we immediatly stopped and
elevated our strategy to promoting BF as a woman's RIGHT, regardless of her
racial identity, and that BM is a GIFT only we can give our children. Wow,
did we peak interest. We now find that our PCs find little resistance when
calling moms because they respond to the moms as Women, like themselves.
To: L. Smith--re: Costs of PC programs for WIC--Nice goals, but difficult to
attain unless the states really plunk some money into BF and stop making
deals with formula co. We will be undertaing such a study in our agency soon
and will keep you informed. Thanks for some guidelines!
