Re Niplette- it is a device developed by Douglas McGeorge MD, F.R.C.S. from
Queen Mary's University Hospital the Department of Plastic and
Reconstructive Surgery, Roehamton, London SW15 5PN. You might want to write
to him. I have a copy of his unpublished article. The niplette is sold in
Canada for$50 llars it is only carried by a very few pharmacists, I believe
it is now on the market in the US.
This physician only had 18 subjects in his study so further research is
necessary. One of his subjects did use it until delivery! Some wore it
intermittently but wearing time was individual. If too great a force was
applied it was painful. Some subjects experienced minor bleeding. The
alternative to this was surgical correction! I do not know anyone who has
used it and we are not recommending its use in Ottawa only informing people
of its availablity, until further research has been conducted.
In our city the management of truly inverted nipples is still early
breastfeeding, frequent breastfeeding, breastpumping and nipple pulling and
rolling following delivery, as well as the use of shells if all else fails.
The shells are still recommended by La Leche League Canada until further
research comes out supporting the Alexander study.
