It is always good to start with a culture and sensitivity. The
sensitivity test will tell you what other antibiotics might be effective in
treating this wound infection. I would bet it is probably a staphlococcal
infection. Other penicillins such as Nafcillin, or even gentamicin might
prove effective, but the culture should tell you.
The contraindication for floxin is supportable, but not absolute.
A short term exposure of several days to a week, with close observation of
the infant would not likely harm the infant. A good reference is:
