Hi all,
Those of you who work with WIC and their Peer Counselors, I need some input.
The county hospital has asked that our Peer Counselors begin visiting the
postpartum moms before their discharge to assist with breastfeeding and
acquaint them with WIC. I'm thrilled and will be inservicing the PCs on
hospital protocol, CPR, universal precautions, etc. Is there written
protocol that you have found helpful? Any pitfalls I should watch for? As
the LC for the county WIC office, they've pretty much given me the reins on
this project and I'd love to learn from those that have been there. (I'm
THRILLED to get some kind of help into this particular hospital, since their
bf rate is less than 20%. Dr. Ed Newton did a study at this hospital that
showed that 75% of the moms who were admitted to the hospital wanting to bf
were discharged bottle-feeding! UGH!)
