Brenda,
I nursed my oldest son (now 9yrs) only until he was 14 mo. old. I was
pressured by my boyfriend at the time to wean early, and my being young (19)
and him being an intimidating &%@#$*, I weaned.
I'll regret it forever. But, we can't change the past, only the present and
the future. Which is why son #2 (10 mo.) will be weaned when he wants to,
and, quite frankly, not before, regardless of what anyone tells me!
Thankfully, I have a husband who extremely supportive of BF and could care
less how long I nurse our newest addition to our family.
Don't let anyone, no matter how proffessional they think they are, tell you
what to do with your baby and your body. If you want to nurse that baby till
he or she is 9yrs, do it! It's nobody's business but yours.
I am a firm believer that kids do better with lots of love and affection and
what better way to show them your love than to share something as special as
breastfeeding with them. I also believe that children have a much healthier
outlook on life and are more independent when allowed to make their own
choices (within reason of course) and to me, that includes when they wean. I
realize that there are times when weaning must occur before anyone is ready,
but wean when you are ready, not when your Doctor is. After all, he's not
the one nursing the baby, you are. And he's not the one at your breast, your
baby is. So why does he have the say so as to when you wean?
Good Luck, take care!
