I concur with Jan Barger re: the potential danger represented by early
discharges. Work published from a Scandinavian group of investigators a few
years ago found that such early discharge in no way resulted in problems.
(They were a bit surprised at this, I suspect.) However, they also were
not loading moms and babes up with meds, separating them during the
hospital stay, etc.
PS. To all LCsin the northern Illinois area. I have just received a
referral from a mother pregnant with #3 (moving in from Florida). She had
both babies at home (daddy caught #2) and wants another midwife-attended
birth, but her husband travels a lot and is pushing for the birth to occur
in a hospital. Mother, however, wants NO PART of an institution that
insists on nursery visits, separation of any kind. She said, "this baby is
going IMMEDIATELY to breast from birth canal. I will NOT allow anyone to
take this baby from me."
Any suggestions where she might be encouraged to inquire? She will be
living in Winnetka.
