Dear Lactnet Friends:

Judith asks about research about wearable pumps.

There is research about their value for working folks; for example,
emergency room physicians and physicians in general ( The Impact of
Wearable Breast Pumps on Physicians' Breastfeeding Experience and Success
BF Medicine 2022) . I can't find any research about their efficacy when
compared with other pumps.

Anecdotally, they are for those who have already established a full supply.
Some mothers are going into hyperlactation using them. I heard a story
about an OB who wore them during deliveries, as she got the most milk
volume then!

Some brands lack the wide range of flange sizes for best comfort and
function, although as this is a competitive market, there are new brands
and products all the time. (And still no research.) Some newer models are
more affordable than $500 a pair for the original brands, including a type
of Elvie that is available at Costco.

What's a new mother to do? What's a lactation service provider to do?

I have found Jeanette Mesite Frem's webinars to be hugely helpful to me, a
lactosaurus regina who started out in the days when there were few pumps
and one could know all of them. She is currently doing a research study
about pumps, has presented at GOLD, offers webinars and classes on her
website (babiesincommon.com) and once you attend some of her classes, you
can become a member of a Facebook page devoted to the topic.

warmly,
