Dear Lactnet Friends:

Football hold is helpful for babies with low tone, and premature infants,
as the mother's forearm gives positional support and the roughly 90 degree
bend of the elbow makes adjustments easy, depending on size of baby, size
of breast, and angle of dangle.

I bought the Womanly Art of Breastfeeding in 1975, and still have that
book. The only position described in detail is lying down, for
sleeping witth baby.

here's what is says about nursing sitting up:

"As to nursing sitting up, you will experiment until you find the most
comfortable position. The only suggestion we would make is that when you
are starting out you will do well to keep in mind that you are going to be
in this position for a while, so arrange matters so that you can be
relaxed, with none of your muscles involved in holding either yourself or
the baby without support. Pillows are useful at your back, or your elbow,
under the baby or wherever you like. If you can prop your feet up, sos much
the better; a new mother's legs get pretty tired at first, so kick
off your shoes and get your feet up if you are comfortable that way."

A classic.

There are five drawings of cradle hold; they are not given names, and two
drawings of twins: in double cradle and double football. Again, no position
has a name. There iss one drawing of mother, father and baby in bed. Baby
is nursing in what seems to be more of a laid-back position,

No photographs, only lovely words. The drawings are of White women only,
often wearing frilly garments. Women are shown in a variety of settings,
being active while nursing. Other drawings show women doing housework.

warmly,
