A typical definition of colostrum is: Colostrum, present in the human
breasts from 12-16 weeks of gestation and for the first 4-6 days
postpartum, is the first milk secreted by the breasts until it transitions
to mature milk. Its dual functions of nutrition and immune protection
nourish and protect the infant during the early vulnerable days following
birth.
