Utah and many of Utah's beekeepers have a history of heavy stocking - 100/yd, dating back to the early 1900s.   In MT, in many similar areas of habitat, we typically see no more than 24-32 colonies per yard. Overall, honey yields are lower than MT.  I suspect over-stocking, exceeding carrying capacity.
