Wonderful review of the studies on nipple shield use, Nikki! Note also
the latest study (Coentro et al in BF Medicine) was underpowered, and
the pain group also transferred numerically less milk with the nipple
shield in place than without it, but the difference was not
statistically significant. I wonder with a larger sample, if it would be.
The other interesting facet is that they found no difference in nipple
pain when the nipple shield was used in mother's using it for nipple
pain than when it was not. This was not stated in the abstract...
I have empathy for researchers, it is soo hard to do good research, and
it's hard to get grant money. That means we always have to be vigilant
to weigh conflicts of interest and look at the results and not just the
interpretation of those results.
