Prolactin can be a pro-inflammatory hormone. However, perhaps the problem is that she has a low estrogen level due to breastfeeding. She could talk to her dermatologist to find out if going on the birth control pill with estrogen would help her symptoms. She will likely have a drop in supply but she would not have to wean. Low dose such as 20mcg estradiol might be better than 35mcg.

Also, she might want to talk to her doctor about having her thyroid function and anti-thyroid antibodies done as well as a transglutaminase Ab, to make sure it is not caused by another source of inflammation, ie thyroiditis or celiac. Thyroiditis is very common postpartum.

Subject: Breastfeeding & mid-dermal elastolysis

Hello Wise People!

Happy solstice to everyone who loves the sun.

I have a client who has recently been diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disorder called mid-dermal elastolysis. Her baby is 4.5 months old.

Breastfeeding got off to a rough start and they had finally hit their stride with easy, pleasurable breastfeeding when the mother was given this diagnosis.

She has been advised to wean, as her specialist physician says that high circulating prolactin makes symptoms and damage worse. My client has joined an online community of people with this disease, and a number of participants have shared that their symptoms were worse during breastfeeding and better after weaning. My client isn't sure, though, that this is representative.

Does anyone here have experience with this condition and breastfeeding?

After such a struggle to get to this easy place, my client is reluctant to wean, but wants to do what is best for her health in the long run.

I appreciate any input you might have.

Thanks, Molly
