Dear Lactnet Friends:

Jacqueline Levine mentions Dee Kassing's approach to dealing with blebs. I
suggest offering or supervising that technique in person because it is more
complex than it looks upon reading the description.

One mother felt that the technique was working because milk was dripping
during the technique; that milk came from all the other ducts, and not the
one in question. In her case, the bleb was 2 months old. (She tolerated
that pain for 2 months!) Relief came after a dermatologist did a punch
biopsy.

Another mother developed a bleb when her baby was about a year old from the
combination of a new bra and a long car ride. She used a sterile needle to
remove the layer of skin over the top of the bleb. As she was a
periodontology intern, I trusted her awareness for the need of sterility.

The big value of Dee's technique is the reminder to keep expressing that
duct until the milk runs clearly and easily, because the milk behind the
bleb is thickening and needs to come out, else a new bleb will form.

warmly,
