Hi Francoise

Yes, I had one client long ago, with Mondor's on her right breast following
lactogenesis with her second baby. It was a single very prominent vein,
looking almost like a bruised varicose vein, on the upper inner quadrant of
her right breast. It was extremely uncomfortable and itchy. She reported
that it was so enlarged when she had her first baby six years previously
that the skin split. She was very afraid that this would happen again but
it didn't. This time, the mother was breastfeeding very successfully,
exclusively, and the baby was gaining weight well, in other words she had a
good breastmilk supply. She found that the vein was less uncomfortable if
she kept the breast pretty well drained; if she allowed it to become too
full, the discomfort and itchiness (almost tissue breakdown over the vein)
became worse. She went on to breastfeed for quite a long time, as I
recall, and there was no special medical advice about the vein.

While I was trying to find out more about Mondor's for this mother I also
found a description in a medical dictionary which said "inflammation of
large subcutaneous vein crossing the lateral chest region and breast, the
vessel appearing as a tender cord."

I used to subscribe to Breastfeeding Review at the time, and I've noted,
that there was a good Table describing Mondor's in their issue for May
1993, page 348 (if you can get hold of it....)

Hope this helps.

Has any of you taken care of a lactating mom, with a Mondor disease, it is
a superficial venous thrombotic pathology of the breast. I had a look in
Core curriculum 2019, Breastfeeding and Human lactation; and Beastfeeding a
guide for the medical profession.
This seems that I can only rely on report of cases- from background, no
breastfeeding nore lactation seem to be the cause and no suspension of bf
is needed; I just wanted to know about your experiences, what you needed to
do and so on.

Breast regards, stay safe!
