Skin to skin works because it is the normal state for new born babies and
their mothers. Anything else is an intervention, including but not limited
to: weighing the baby, swaddling the baby, taking the baby to the nursery,
the mother showering before holding the baby, examining the baby on table
near the mother, use of bassinets.
Outside of emergencies, EVERY baby and mother need to spend the first hour
and most of the first few days skin to skin. In the event of emergencies,
mother and baby need to spend as much time as possible skin to skin.
Failure to do so is failure of medicine, science, and culture. Mostly
culture.
Just my 2c.
Shana tovah.
