Hello Everyone,

This is my first ever question to LACTNET (I feel like I should mark this event somehow).

I have a question for you all. A client today said that her doctor told her that increased cortisol in breastmilk can change the taste of breastmilk. He was suggesting that the stress she is experiencing around parenting through the COVID-19 outbreak might be the reason that her baby has been reluctant to breastfeed recently.

We have discussed the possible reasons why her baby may be reluctant to feed lately and the mother’s new approaches have already improved the situation.

I cannot seem to find any research that would indicate that cortisol might change the taste of breastmilk so I thought I would ask you all. Has anyone heard of this and if so, can you please point me to the research?

Thank you,
Cecily Heslett, IBCLC (in private practice in rural Ontario, Canada)
