Dear Wise Women,

A mother discovered mold in her pump tubing and is unsure how long it has been present. She is getting new tubing and has the information on how to keep tubing dry for the future but is concerned about the milk she has already pumped and given to her baby. She also has about three months frozen and worries if it is safe to give her baby.

I can't find information on the safety of the milk. I found one source that suggested scalding but with no study to support that. I also found a source that suggests mold spores can be growing for up to 21 days before being visible but more related to breathing the spores, not ingesting them. Do any of you know if 1) there is a hazard to giving the frozen milk to the baby once it is thawed, 2) would scalding the milk once thawed kill any mold that might be present, and 3) is consuming mold even harmful?

Thank you for whatever information you can share,

Cindy Garrison BS IBCLC
