Wanting to update our hospitals policy about how long formula can be out at room temperature after opening sterile ready to feed bottle if you pour off formula and the cover bottle but leave out at room temp. We are told one hour from formula rep but nicu is feeding formula by pump and it's out 4 hours. They do the same with previously frozen breastmilk. Why can nicu give breastmilk over 4 hours but we tell patients with healthy term babies that previously frozen milk can be out 1 to 2 hours? Does anyone have info on this? Why would they have formula out so long for babies that are medically fragile? Is this best practice?
