Dear Lactnet Friends:

If you look closely at the high resolution Figure one, you can see that
there are differences in microbiota. Claiming that the differences are
insignificant is just that, a claim. Not a fact.. . .because those babies
would have to be followed for years to see the impact of the formula
supplementation.

Secondly, why not supplement with human milk if babies need
supplementation? This study is supporting formula use.

Thirdly, what mother is going to have "copious milk production" in a
hospital stay?

Fourth, giving 10 ml of formula after each breastfeeding would end up being
at least 80 ml of formula in 24 hours, when it is known that a newborn
ingests a total of around 30 ml in 24 hours on Day 1.

Alison Stuebe MD has written a lovely analysis:

https://bfmed.wordpress.com/2016/01/31/of-goldilocks-and-neonatal-hypernatremia/

Also, I have a question. Is it possible that 3 generations of not
breastfeeding is enough to negatively affect DNA and gene expression so
that more mothers won't be able to lactate?

We don't know, do we?

warmly,
