Dear Lactnet Friends:

Heather Harris is the Australian midwife that first brought this idea to
our lactation world in 1994. She presented at ILCA about it, and had a film
illustrating a case study.

At worst, it calms parent and baby. A struggling dyad needs some close
connection and fun. That is in itself, an enormous benefit.

The KEY is to set up the bath with no expectations, only an attitude of
curiosity. "What will happen?" . Who knows?

Sometimes the baby will go through a catharsis triad of behaviors,
sometimes more than once. This is where baby crawls and roots, then has an
emotional release, then sleeps. The triad of behaviors takes about 20
minutes. The mother needs calm support during these releases, "the baby is
telling you their story". She is to listen, cuddle, and love. Once the
baby, like any human, tells their story, healing is the result of her
compassion.

The baby may crawl to breast and breastfeed, but not always. That is why it
is important to offer remedial co-bathing as a way to calm and promote
connection, only.

I have a chapter about remedial co-bathing in my book, "Complementary and
Alternative Medicine in Breastfeeding Therapy"; published by Praeclarus. I
just re-read it, and, aside from one typographical error, there is nothing
to add.

warmly,
