Way to go, Ruth! So encouraging. Sometimes change can seem so very slow. One mother - one hospital - one community at a time!

Hi all and Pat,
I agree. As a BFHI assessor, we interview postnatal mothers and one set of questions centres around where their babies stay while in hospital. When asked "Has you baby stayed with you/in your room since their birth? Mother's look puzzled and ask "Where else would they stay?" They are unaware that at one time it was routine for babies to be kept in nurseries and mothers to have limited contact. As an assessor, it is so good to interview a mother and have her tell me all about how good breastfeeding is.

In a couple of areas, breastfeeding is now a part of the culture. One hospital in the state of Tasmania, Australia, now has statistics of over 75% of exclusive breastfeeding at 2 weeks of age. This hospital is in a socio-economic depressed area where formula feeding had been the norm. It is a huge achievement for the staff and community to change from a bottle feeding culture to a breastfeeding culture.

am I the only one who missed it? "Calling Time on Formula Milk
Adverts: The BMJ and our sister journals will no longer carry ads for Breastmilk substitutes by 5 editors. Nearly 40 years since the introduction of an international code......after decades of advertising breastmilk substitutes to readers of The BMJ, we have decided it is time to stop. [!!!} This validates my research "From Paper to Practice" 25 years ago about it takes practice 20-30 years to change. BMJ took 40. Gene Cranston Anderson's early articles on Kangaroo Care were published in the late 1980's. Do you have routine STS in your hospital? Do you have nurseries or rooming in routinely? Sometimes I think we haven't made any progress and then I see young mothers at my LLL meetings and hear them saying good things that I wish I had known in the 60's!
I wonder if the AAP will ever give up breastmilk substitutes money???? Pat in SNJ
