Dear Anne,

First, let me state that this reply is in no way scientific.

Second, my first career was in teaching and for over 20 years ran a preschool, leaving when I was hired as a hospital-based IBCLC. One of the units we did was on food groups. To help children understand where different foods come from, we would make butter. This was done by pouring cream into a jar, sealing it tight and send it from child to child around a circle with each child shaking the jar while the others counted to ten. The fat would clump together, separating form the liquid. That is my reasoning for not shaking the milk, but recommending swirling. Little butter clumps are not likely to move well through supplemental feeding tubing or bottle nipple holes.
