Louanne , can the mother ask the doctor about other medications that may be
as effective but not as new (thus no research yet available)?

Often medications chosen are based on the latest sales rep that has been by
the office or at a conference they attended, but not necessarily that it is
hugely more effective than the one used for the previous 10 years.

Just wondering..

I did find this in e-Lactancia.org under the Spanish name: cinitaprida:
http://www.e-lactancia.org/breastfeeding/cinitapride/product/  .I
highlighted another reason this mom may want to change meds.

Benzamide-type drug that is similar to Cisapride.

At latest update no published data on excretion into breast milk were found.

Drug that is poorly documented in the scientific literature. It seems to be
lacking of side effects (QT-interval prolongation, cardiac arrhythmias) that
led to the withdrawal of Cisapride.

Until more published information about this drug regarding breastfeeding
appears, it may be preferable a known and safer alternative, especially
during the neonatal period and in cases of prematurity.

And, as you suspected, the alternatives listed in e-lactancia are
familiar..and also challenging for different reasons.

Alternatives

*	Domperidone (Very Low Risk)
*	Metoclopramide (Very Low Risk)
