Hello fellow Lactnetters!!

Once again, I’m hoping to pick your collective brains!! I continue to struggle with management of late-preterm and early-term infants in regards to pumping recommendations and I was wondering if you would share any of your practice guidelines/resources with me.

I was fortunate to work with a mother from another culture who politely refused all of my recommendations for management of breastfeeding her late-preterm, SGA infant (i.e.. pump after each breastfeeding and offer expressed milk to infant…). She stated that in her country pumping is not usual practice and that she intended to “feed the baby more often,” every hour, if necessary. For the several days I worked with her I was pleasantly surprised at how well her infant did! Her weight loss and output were very good!!! Unfortunately, I did not have the benefit of following infants' weight and breastfeeding course after discharge.

How do you manage late-preterm (34-36.6 weeks) and early-term (37-38.6 weeks) infants?

Also, for TERM infants, does infants' size impact your breastfeeding management, and if so, how?

Thanks again for any insight.

Sincerely,
Amy
