The situation you describe in your hospitals is similar here in Spain, a
lot of rushing staff "putting out fires", a lot of different and
contradicting messages from each staff turn, a lot of "you are doing it
wrong, this is the right way." And I find often mothers themselves have
read breastfeeding manuals during pregnancy and they are the ones extremely
worried about flanged lips and getting it right just like in the picture.

I guess we have to work on the message of mother and baby become acquainted
with each other and with breastfeeding those first days, respecting their
rythm, while making sure mother reports any pain and baby has good
output... a balancing act :)

However, the point of my first post was that a pediatrician said to me: if
some babies have an awful looking latch, but breastfeeding is working,
where is the evidence that incorrect latch is the cause of pain, and pain
resolves when latch is corrected? So those are the studies I´m looking for,
because I thought it was a very interesting and valid point she brought up.
