One of our Neonatologists would like research about the safety of using Coconut oil/lansinoh/olive oil etc.. for lubrication when moms of preemies are pumping. He is questioning whether the lubrication could create an environment for bacteria to grow. We have discussed the bacteria already present on the mothers skin when she pumps, the antibacterial component of Coconut oil, the hand hygiene of moms/nurses when handling the pump parts, the possible discomfort of not using lubrication for the mothers, how breast milk itself fights bacteria, that a minimal amount gets in the milk, and on and on. He just simply wants the research to show safety.
Has anyone come across research on this?
