Many Lactnetters will be sad to hear of the death of Darillyn Starr. Darillyn was a pioneer of adoptive breastfeeding of children placed as non-newborns and of the appreciation of the emotional value that breastfeeding could have for children with a history of abuse or neglect. Her article “Nursing Julia” http://www.llli.org/nb/nbsepoct93p135.html <http://www.llli.org/nb/nbsepoct93p135.html> was the first published article on initiating breastfeeding with an older baby and was an inspiration for me as I considered whether breastfeeding was something that was appropriate, beneficial or possible for my own newly adopted toddler and I I began undertaking research and writing myself on adoptive breastfeeding. Darillyn helped many, many adoptive mothers and women who were reinitiating breastfeeding after having weaned and was always so generous with her time and expertise. I will miss her greatly, I can only imagine how hard it must be for her six children.
