One of my dearest friends is a stability chemist, responsible for
setting those expiration dates. There is a wide margin of safety in set
expiration dates, because breakdown of chemicals depends on storage
conditions. So, if the medication is stored in a cool, dry, dimly lit
environment in the original packaging, it may indeed be potent far
longer than the expiration date, and if it's in a hot, humid
environment, it may not. There are a few medications that break down
into dangerous compounds - tetracycline being the poster child, whose
breakdown products can cause kidney damage. Look up the particular
medication to be safe.
