Dear Lactnet friends:

Welcome Cecily.

I remember my first post to Lactnet, and how much I proof-read it, and read
it aloud to be sure that it was clear before clicking on the send link.

It is always so interesting when a healthcare provider uses a scientific
approach to undermine confidence in physiologic feeding. What you describe
is a modern version of the belief that a stressed mother shouldn't
breastfeed, because she might pass the stress onto her baby; even today, in
disasters, this belief survives. I remember hearing about it after the
earthquake in Haiti.

Meanwhile, we know that the hormones of lactation will serve to calm both
mother and baby.

If the baby is reluctant to feed, there are a host of things to consider
long before the taste of the milk from the breast.

You can't find any research on this topic because, to the best of my
knowledge, it doesn't exist. Some foods, some medications, a new deodorant
or the time of ovulation or menses have been identified as changing the
taste, but not cortisol. And these situations are individual, for a
particular dyad.

warmly,
