"Motor skills do not just come as birthday presents. They must be nurtured, promoted, and practiced." - Jane E. Clark (2007)

This is one of my favorite quotations from the field of kinesiology (the study of human movement, motor learning, and motor control) because its language is reminiscent of the Innocenti Declaration on the Protection, Promotion, and Support of Breastfeeding.

Note that Jane Clark's bio from the University of Maryland website mentions her focus on the relationship between perception and action in infants and young children:

"Jane Clark (Professor, Department of Kinesiology & UM Neuroscience and Cognitive Sciences (NACS) program) was previously Chair of Kinesiology and is now Dean of the University of Maryland School of Public Health. Dr. Clark earned her PhD in motor development from the University of Wisconsin in 1986. She has published >100 manuscripts. Her expertise is in children’s growth and motor development and she focuses on the relationship between perception and action in infants and young children and also in children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD). Because of their motor difficulties, DCD children are not physically active and are, therefore, at risk for CVD. Dr. Clark has also led projects that have combined nutrition and physical activity. In 2001, she chaired a committee that generated Guidelines for Infant and Preschool Physical Activity. She was the UM Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year and has trained 13 doctoral, 13 masters students, and numerous undergraduate students. She has mentored six UM STAR trainees in the first five years of the program."
