It is current and common practise in the NICU I currently work in to use HMF or powdered infant formula to fortify breastmilk on VLBW infants. Currently the nursing practise is to only fortify enough breastmilk for that 12 hour shift to help reduce wastage. It was also told to the nursing staff that this was the practise because it "breaks down some nutritients in the breastmilk." Does fortification break down anything in the breastmilk, if so what? Also is there a time limit after the milk has been fortified that this breakdown starts to occur at 12 hours, 24 hours? Thank you.
