"He received 22cal formula for the first couple of days until her milk came in. He is now 4 weeks old and has seemingly been in pain off and on…..He arches his back a lot and has long bouts of crying. ...He gets stressed when feedings are initiated by breast or bottle, though bottle less so. His output and weight are great because parents tend to him constantly, feeding small amounts during crying jags and anywhere from 3-4oz when he isn't crying. They have just started probiotics and eliminated dairy.”
Wendy, you have just described the child who has been made milk-allergic by early complementary feeds. It is absolutely typical for misery to emerge and to involve arching back away from the breast, usually after tasting the first mouthful. The third section of my latest book discusses all this in great detail and sets out a treatment plan which includes dairy elimination (but don’t expect instant relief, it can take weeks before milk antigen is removed from mother’s milk and in that time she may well be exposed to hidden sources of bovine protein, and develop other reactions to other foods, which makes it difficult.) Did you check what probiotics, how produced? Different results with different strains of bacteria, and having them as the same time as milk elimination makes assessing outcomes more difficult.
I’ll send you a private email with details of my website where the book is outlined.
