Hi Laurie, good to hear from you!

Video, article, no, ...I found the video you mentioned and it looks good,
...as we know it can be a little (or alot) more challenging with freshly
postpartum moms, working to gets those drops of colostrum expressed.
Technique, yes. After quickly developing a good rapport with mom (in a
seemingly very unhurried manner) saying positive and soothing things, and
helping mom relax (while simultaneously calming baby among other things)...then
positioning her for comfort (pillows!), we would practice a deep cleansing
breath "slowly in through your nose and out through your lips" while I
stroke her shoulders downward and say something like "just release that
tension, ...oh yes, very good, so much better, let that tension flow down your
arms and out your fingertips, ... that will help the milk just come
right_on_down" while doing light effurage strokes towards the nipple during that
last line.
The tone of voice and delivery of these words seems to make *a world of
difference*, it is similar to how it would sound if someone was trying to put
you in a meditative or hypnotic state, you see the moms face go from tense
anxiety to calm relief.
Seems almost any type of massage will work as long as mom is comfortable
with it, ...I tend to do fingertip little circles, working from outer
margins in concentric circles to the nipple, much like a standard breast exam
because I am also doing a breast exam, then stroking, kneading, gentle rolling
between hands, maybe a little very gentle compressing here and there, then
expressing a drop or two and saying in an almost hushed tone "wow look at
that, ...when well latched-on (my thumb and fore fingertips are now placed
where baby's lips should be) his tongue cupped and undulating (my other
hand is somewhat miming this), your baby is sooo much better at getting that
milk out than I am, and that looks like plenty of milk in there, excellent".
I might need to repeat the relaxation routine, while calming or waking the
baby saying in a non-hurried manner "...you are doing great, let's practice
that again while I get the baby, cleansing breath iiiin and ouuut, relaaax
those shoulders, release aaany tension, think about riiivers of milk
flowing towwwards your nipples..." if you see her shoulders release and her eyes
close to visualize rivers of milk, bingo!
<<<<What is the length of time that you find productive? >>>>
this all might take a few minutes, and I would do this or similar with
just about every mom, very rarely not do such, ...the actual massage part could
take a minute or two/breast (with non-engorged breast) I've probably often
taken less than a minute/breast.
