Dear Michelle,
Cold green cabbage leaves are one of the suggestions I give mothers for
engorgement along with frequent milk removal, lymph and breast massage
(ala Maya Bolman), Ibuprofen, cool between feeds, warmth before, and
foods that help flush out edema in general. You should consider asking
the mother if she is allergic to sulfa drugs. Cabbage is in this family.
You do not want her to end up with a rash on her already swollen breasts!
I suggest removing the outer leaves and rinsing them before she puts
them on her breasts. They worked for me 17 years ago and I have had many
mothers tell me they were life savers. I have heard that not only does
the cool feel great but that cabbage helps reduce edema which is the
real culprit here.
