Looking for current research and practice recommendations for the mother with thyroid dysfunction and lactation
(Lisa Marasco, thank you for your informative article in LLLI Breastfeeding Abstracts, February 2006) Have been unable to find anything else following the article with any concrete advise.
Working with a mother with Hx of hypothyroid who is taking levothyroxine and whose baby is doing well at the breast (6 hours old). Mother had a history of low milk supply with 1st child.
- Have you experienced post-feed pumping to boost lactogenesis to normal milk supply or is time better spent enhancing her let-down with gentle breast massage and using breast compression during the feeding?
- Is a thyroid function profile beneficial at a few days post-partum rather than waiting 6 weeks?
- If needed, which galactagogues would be recommended shatavari, moringa/malunggay? (I know fenugreek is generally contraindicated with thyroid issues)
Thank you!
Jan
