Dear Lactnet Friends:
It takes about 2 weeks for prolactin receptor sites to be primed; Cathy
Watson Genna and Lisa Marasco have both reiterated this critical time for
building milk supply.
As nipple shields can reduce supply (they are sometimes used in community
as a way to deal with oversupply), insurance pumping (4 times a day) while
the shields are being used in the first 2 weeks postpartum, with monitoring
of infant weight gain is safe practice.
After that 2 weeks, what happens next can be tailored to fit the mother.
Some babies will transfer enough with the shield ( pre/post feed weights)
that the pumping can be further reduced. Some babies won't.
There are still so many questions about safe use of the shield.
