Hi Amy,

Common with babies overwhelmed with flow to 1) clamp on nipple to slow
flow...
2) catch their breath

In this case of a 2 day old, as you suspect is likely to be frustration
with slow flow, ...smart baby trying to stimulate the nipple to elicit MER.

Suggestions for LC/nurse then support person to help mom with:

Before feedings:
-comfortable relaxed supported positioning
-warm decaf tea and soothing atmosphere
-warm compresses to breast
-gentle and thorough breast massage

During feedings:
-mom can intermittently take a deep breath, relax her shoulders and
visualize "rivers of milk flowing towards your nipple" - if LC is there; lightly
stroke/effleurage towards nipple and show support person how
-gentle breast compression and stroking towards the nipple; *well away*
from nipple, high up on breast, from the sides, and even more carefully
underneath areas of breast, in such a way as to not interfere with the deep
latch or pull on breast away from baby's deep latch.

If anyone gets anxious and things were to progress to the point of someone
asking about or insisting on supplementing, opt for a 5 french at breast.
