Just to share (with her permission). I  have a friend/ co-worker that has been battling this for over a year.  Last nursed a baby 5yrs ago. First treated as any mastitis, antibiotics, ice etc.   Second, she had a persistent 'clogged area' and ended having it drained. Shortly re-occured. 
Long story, short she has had pain, engorgement, redness on and off the whole time.  Several courses of antibitoics, biopsy, cultures and several I&Ds with a Wick for sometimes two weeks and currently has one.  She says she has had about 2 weeks every few months that things seem better and then worse again. She is scheduled for a mastectomy next month after consulting two breast surgeons throught this.                                                                                                                                       She recently found a 'blog' support group with many women experiencing this.  Several have issues as she has had and continue battling it.  Several have gone the mastectomy route and years later very happy with the decision.
